Which trees can be made into a bonsai?

Bonsai is not a tree species, it’s a combination of cultivation techniques to produce small trees that mimic the shape and scale of full-size trees in small containers. Most any tree and many plants can become a bonsai.

How do I make the tree small?

Bonsai are made and kept small because they are planted in small containers and they receive regular pruning of the branches and roots.

How are bonsai pots special?

They are typically shallow for aesthetics and for good drainage. They will usually have extra holes for drainage and for wiring. Larger pots may be used for initial training.

How often do you need to water bonsai trees?

Taking care of a Bonsai is a little more work than keeping a regular plant alive. Place your tree in the right location.  In the summer you will probably water it daily, maybe more, maybe less.

How often do you need to fertilize bonsai trees?

A light fertilizer every two weeks during growing season.

Can you grow bonsai from seeds?

Yes you can and in fifteen or twenty years it’ll look great! If you don’t want to wait that long, we suggest using existing plants.  Look for the larger trunks.

How old are bonsai trees?

Some are just a few years old, some are hundreds.

What to do with bonsai trees during the winter?

Typically, bonsai are left outside over the winter.  Some people put them in protected areas and cover with leaves, straw or pine needles. The main thing is to make sure they don’t dry out!

What is Air Layering?

A method of propagating a plant by girdling or cutting part way into a stem or branch and packing the area with a moist medium, as sphagnum moss, stimulating root formation so that the stem or branch can be removed and grown as an independent plant. That way you can get a good head start without having to grow it from scratch.

Is Bonsai cruel?

Bonsai is no crueler than trimming your hedges or mowing your lawn. Bonsai techniques like pruning, wiring, and re-potting are essential parts of ensuring a plant’s health. More importantly, Bonsai are grown with a lot of affection, patience, and care. They often outlive trees growing in nature.
